High Efficiency Condensing Boilers

Boilers account for around 60% of the carbon dioxide emissions in a typical gas heated home. By replacing an old G rated boiler with a new, high efficiency condensing boiler and improving your heating controls, you will significantly cut your home's carbon dioxide emissions and could save as much as £235 a year.

Condensing boilers are more efficient than non condensing boilers because they reuse heat that would otherwise escape through the flue. Fossil fuels such as gas produce a lot of vapour. A normal boiler will release this vapour, at a temperature well above boiling point. A condensing boiler will cool this vapour before releasing it, and transfer the heat to the heating system. Condensing boilers’ high operating efficiency is achieved by the design of the condensing boiler's larger heat exchanger. The heat exchanger makes sure that as much heat as possible is transferred from the boiler's burner, with the minimum lost in gases through the flue.

Two Types of Condensing Boiler

There are two types of condensing boiler. Regular condensing boilers heat your hot water through a hot water cylinder. Combination condensing boilers give you instant hot water without the need for a cylinder.

A Rated Condensing Boilers – Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Not all home heating systems will be compatible with a combination boiler. A qualified installer will tell you which type of condensing boiler, regular or combination, is most suitable for your home.

If your boiler is 15 years old or more then it could be a G rated boiler. A heating engineer will tell you if your boiler is G rated. Replacing an old G rated boiler with a new A rated condensing boiler and a full set of heating controls can save up to a quarter on your heating bills and improve your carbon footprint by saving more than 1 Tonne of CO2 year.

If your boiler is younger than 15 years then it is likely to be more efficient so will save you less if you replace it.

According to the Energy Saving Trust:

  • With a non condensing boiler every £40 of a £100 bill is in wasted heat whereas with a condensing boiler only £10 of a £100 bill is in wasted heat.
  • Installing a new condensing boiler and a full set of heating controls could save you between  £190 - £230 and 1.7 tonnes of CO2 a year.
